Right across the coffee shop from Al Mubarak Restaurant is Mahan Food, a Malay Muslim stall selling nasi padang, lontong, mee siam, mee rebus and mee soto.
Other than the nasi padang, their noodle dishes are all priced affordably at $3. I ordered a bowl of mee soto and I could not resist the temptation of adding a begedil and fried chicken wing to complete my meal.
Don't you think the begedil and fried chicken wing are the best accompaniments to pair with mee soto? The makcik placed the two sides separately in another bowl. She even helped to cut up the chicken wing for easy eating.
The total bill came up to $5.20.
The bowl of mee soto looks very promising.
The yellow noodle is topped with bean sprouts and generous chunks of tender chicken meat that come with bits of skin. It is then further garnished with fried shallots and coriander (parsley? cilantro?) with a dollop of sambal kicap.
It is thoughtful of the makcik to serve the sides separately therefore I could taste the crispiness of the chicken wing and begedil. Both are nicely seasoned and not oily at all.
I wished I could have more helpings.
I threw half of the begedil and the wing into the noodles to soak up the broth while the remaining begedil and drumstick remained in the dry bowl.
Sometimes, I just could not make up my mind whether to have them as it is or to have them soggy. Both are nice in their own ways
The yellow noodles were a little softer than al dente. Fortunately, the crunch from the bean sprouts complemented it.
The strength of the sambal kicap is rather mild so it is good news for those who cannot take spiciness.
It is not bad at all, just that my ideal sambal kicap should be pedas enough to send my tongue into a frenzy and make me sweat buckets at the same time.
Even though the sambal kicap falls short of my expectation, the broth did not disappoint.
It is strong and rich yet not overpowering. It has many layers of flavors and a balance of spices unlike the many versions out there that are weak and had a lack of depth of flavor.
