Soup Restaurant at Jurong Point |
Having walked past the Soup Restaurant so many times, I still have yet to try their food. Since Dad's birthday was round the corner, we decided to hold his birthday luncheon here last Saturday.
Boiled Soup 煲汤 |
For the choice of soup, we chose Lotus Soup (莲藕汤) which was served in this black earthen pot. It reminds me the kind that you brew black, bitter chinese medicine in!
The soup, though a little salty, was flavorsome.
The meat rich with flavors of the soup! |
Samsui Ginger Chicken 三水鸡 |
From what I found out, the chicken was cooked exactly how the Samsui women used to do it. The meat was sweet, succulent and tender.
I loved the minced ginger especially!
Dip a slice of meat in the ginger, wrap it in a piece of letteuce (that comes together with the chicken) and eat it Peking Duck style!
干煸四季豆 |
I do not usually like dried shrimps but this was mixed with salted fish therefore making it very delectable with rice. Unfortunately, the whole dish was lacking in wok-hei.
I am not saying this dish is bad. Just... not there.
家乡自制豆腐 |
I was reminded of Tauhu Goreng (Malay Fried Tofu) when this dish was served. The tofu's texture was soft and silken. The sauce was nice too.
Steamed Sang Yu slices 清蒸生鱼片 |
I loved steamed fish especially when they are served Cantonese styled!
Tofu Prawn 豆腐虾 |
This was probably the least well-received dish of all. We were first excited to see the Tofu Prawns served in Chilli Crab gravy but we were soon to discover that the prawns were over cooked while the sauce failed to impress.
Venison with Ginger & Spring Onion 姜葱鹿肉 |
The taste was passable but the meat was not tender and smooth enough. Again, the lack of wok-hei.
Scallops with Broccoli 带子西兰花 |
The Scallops were snapped up pretty fast leaving behind only the vegetables. There was hardly any sauce making the brococoli a little hard to swallow because of it's blandness.
However, with the steamed fish sauce to the rescue, it is not that bad afterall!
Stewed Chicken Breast with Roast Pork & Tofu 鸡胸烧肉豆腐煲 |
This was one of their latest creations on the menu but I do not like the combination of the meats with tofu so I did not touch this dish.
It reminded me of leftovers dumped into a pot aka “一锅熟”
The end of lunch |
Food do not get wasted as we usually packet home the leftovers. Even the ginger from the Samsui Chicken was not spared.
The portions were surprisingly big and satisfying. Although not all the dishes were up to expectations, the service of the staff make up for it.
The waitress serving our table was very attentive and quick to respond to our requests.
Most importantly, I did not see her stop smiling throughout our duration there. I am a sucker for good service. Your product may not be up to standard but if your service is good, I will not mind coming back again!
Dad's birthday cake |
Sister-in-law baked a pound cake for Dad too. Although it was not as fanciful as those from the shops, you have to give her credit for creativity and effort.
Yes, those are Macarons you see there.
Remember the waitress I mentioned earlier? When she knew that we had a cake, she promptly cleared the dishes and cleaned the table for us. She also checked with us whether we require a knife to slice the cake and she even took the initiative to supply us with plates even though we did not request for it.
A little costly but it's money well spent as long everyone enjoys it |
