To be frank, it was the posters of Bruce Lee that pulled me towards this roast stall called The Legend Roasted Meat Rice And Noodle which is located at the back row on the first level of Hong Lim Market & Food Centre.
When I got nearer, I discovered even more memorabilia like figurines and photographs. When the lady inside the stall saw me taking photos, she asked: "are you also a fan?"
I would be lying if I said I was but I nodded anyway.
"I had been collecting them for over forty years." she said, beaming with pride.
Indeed, one can tell that the stall owner is obsessed with the kungfu star by the amount of memorabilia found all over the stall. You can even see a shadow figure of Bruce on the signboard doing a high kick.
Oh, and do not mistaken the nunchucku (second last photo) hanging on the rack as siew cheong!
Other than char siew and roasted meat, the stall also serve roasted duck, soy chicken and ribs, if I am not mistaken. You can have these with either rice or noodle.
I decided to go for the char siew and roasted pork rice ($5). The price is a dollar more than Lee Kheong Roasted Delicacy upstairs on the second level but the portion of the roasted meat is more here and it come with fresh greens with a bowl of soup.
I love the melt-in-the-mouth tender char siew!
As I visited on a Tuesday morning, I missed out on their fei po char siew which is only available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If their normal char siew already far surpasses my standards, I wonder how much more impressive is their special char siew?
Their fun-sized roasted pork is very adorable because it is like so short. With equal parts of lean and fats, the texture is enjoyable especially with the biscuit-y crispy skin. I have not had such crispy roasted pork skin for a while now.
The added greens and the bowl of soup is a nice bonus to have.
I am so happy with this meal that I immediately went back to takeaway another pack home for the folks to share. My discovery of this roast stall was met with equal excitement at home as Dad had nothing but praises for it and presses me for the location.
I guess that says something?
That is not siew cheong (roasted sausage).
