Tien Lai Rice Stall at Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre is known for their roasts, particularly their char siew which is rated very highly among foodies online.
During my previous visits to the food centre, I noticed that a line of customers have already formed in front of the stall even before they are ready for business.
I decided not to join the queue then because the line only gets increasingly longer by the minute. Today, I was surprised to see only three customers in the queue therefore, I wasted no time in joining them.
Of course I had to get me some of their famous char siew but then, I was craving for roasted duck as well hence, I decided to order a mix of both meats.
Pricing was not listed anywhere thus I was curious about the price. However, I am delighted to find out that my order of char siew rice with roasted duck meat costs only $4 which is very reasonable!
As I sat down, my nose caught a whiff of fragrance coming from the sauce. I recalled seeing them drizzling two kinds of dark sauce over the rice which I believed to be dark soy and braising sauce.
I am glad they did not thicken their sauce with starch as I disliked those.
I tend to choke on rice so having some sauce is much appreciated however, it would be a nice touch if they offer complimentary soup and cucumber slices.
The exterior of the char siew was beautifully caramelized with a nice, sweet marinade. Not only that, it comes with a distinct smoky flavor not found in many other mediocre barbecued meat.
I like my char siew with a little fat but what I had was more on the leaner side. I should have requested for 半肥瘦 char siew.
On the other hand, what stood out for me was the roasted duck meat. The skin is a thin layer of crisp with just a bit of grease. The meat while lean, was tender. It was also not overly salty but just sufficiently salted.
This chicken rice chili is fantastic as the tartness of the white vinegar really hits the spot.
They do have the other kind of sambal chili but you have to ask them for it as they did not put it outside.
For me, I still prefer this chili as it is so appetizing. The next time, I would spam this chili directly on the rice.
In order not to be disappointed, you have to come early as they are usually sold out by noon.
Tien Lai is well-loved for serving great food at pocket friendly prices however, the icing on the cake is the warm and friendly deposition of the ladies serving me.
