In the previous post, I had the vegetarian nasi lemak from Hong Cook Food however, my hunger was not satiated by its small portion so I went in search of the other vegetarian stalls at Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre to see what they have to offer.

I came upon En Hui Vegetarian Food and what caught my eye here, is the photo of their vegetarian chicken rice ($5).

The stall owner began to fry the mock chicken in the deep fryer only after I placed an order so there is a short wait.

The ingredients in my vegetarian chicken rice include a rather large portion of mock chicken and a few cubes of fried tau kwa drizzled with dark soy sauce. By the side is a mound of rice with zai er (mock goose) on top.

Although the mock chicken and zai er are basically made of the same thing, they have different textures. The former is more layered with the resemblance to real meat while the latter is thin and crisp.

For chicken rice (vegetarian or otherwise), the yellow colored rice was a little unusual. The rice is a little lumpy but it can be easily broken up by pressing with the back of the spoon. No big issue.

You obviously cannot cook the rice with real chicken stock here so expect some compromise in terms of taste from the real thing. However, it does come with very strong hints of ginger though.

You would be disappointed if you were expecting the usual garlic chili sauce. Being vegetarian, it have to be allium-free so there is no garlic in it.

It is mostly white vinegar so it is tangy and a bit sweet. If you are a chili fiend, take note that this is not spicy at all.

Because everything is deep fried, it could get a little jelak but thanks to the clever use of vinegar, it cuts through the greasiness so it was not so bad.

The thing about Marsiling Mall is that it is not very accessible to get to although it is only one bus stop distance away from the temporary Woodlands bus interchange.

The hawker centre is located on the ground level of Marsiling Mall. My observation is that it can get pretty warm and stuffy in there as the ceiling fan circulates the hot air repeatedly. Also, the dim lighting just does not seem very welcoming. I prefer the row of tables facing the main road as ventilation is better there.

The shops and supermarket can be found on the second level whereas the third level and above is the multi-storey car park.
