If I am not mistaken, Hong Cook Food is one of the three vegetarian stalls located at Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre.
I found out about this stall when I come across a photo of their vegetarian nasi lemak ($4) on Facebook. It looked promising to me so I was tempted to give it a try.
Something cropped up on the day that I am supposed to drop by. I postponed the visit to the following week which coincidentally falls on the lunar fifteenth when I have to abstain from meat for a day.
Seems like everything is working out according to someones' plan.
The ingredients on the plate of coconut rice included a fried egg, mock fish, mock ikan bilis with peanuts and sambal chili. You may ask to omit the egg if you are a pure vegetarian.
At first glance, I mistook the mock ikan bilis for fried shallots. I am uncertain what they are made of but they are pretty crispy. As for the peanuts, they are fresh and does not have the putrid stale oil smell.
The mock ikan bilis with peanuts is homemade by the stall and available for sale in bottles. I believe you need to pre-order in advance as they are only made upon order.
Spotting a lovely hue of green, the fragrant coconut rice is infused with the flavor and color of pandan leaves which pairs extremely well with their homemade spicy sambal chili.
On the whole, this vegetarian nasi lemak is generally okay. The only issue lies with the two thin slices of mock fish which were rather unmemorable to me.
They serve the usual vegetarian fried bee hoon fare with mock char siu, zai er and cabbage. They also have the daily specials. The nasi lemak is only available on Sundays and a random weekday.
Do check out their full menu here.
The thing about Marsiling Mall is that it is not very accessible to get to although it is only one bus stop distance away from the temporary Woodlands bus interchange.
The hawker centre is located on the ground level of Marsiling Mall. My observation is that it can get pretty warm and stuffy in there as the ceiling fan circulates the hot air repeatedly. Also, the dim lighting just does not seem very welcoming. I prefer the row of tables facing the main road as ventilation is better there.
The shops and supermarket can be found on the second level whereas the third level and above is the multi-storey car park.
