This KPT Coffee Shop at blk 127 Bukit Merah Lane 1 is truly amazing. With only three food stalls and one drinks stall, it managed to keep afloat despite competition from the nearby Kek Eng Kee and Alexandra Village Food Centre.

From Yang Zhou Fried Hokkien Mee in the previous post, the no name fish soup in this post and the ang ku kueh from Poh Cheu in the upcoming post, all three are popular in their own rights with each drawing a constant queue during their operating hours.

The queue at this fish soup stall, in particular, can stretch all the way out of the coffee shop during lunch hour. One reason for the queue built-up is because every bowl is cooked individually, with only one uncle helming the stove. However, you can see him cooking furiously away non-stop over a roaring fire whose flames envelops the tiny pot bubbling away.

When I reached around noon, the queue was already snaking out of the coffee shop. I stood in line for about thirty minutes before it is my turn to place an order with the auntie. I ordered the fried fish fish soup without milk and a bowl of white rice for $5.50. Just before serving, the auntie took a bottle and squeeze what I believe to be Chinese cooking wine into the bowl.

Inside my fish soup, there are a few large pieces of battered fish with a whole lot of crumbs while underneath all that is a generous serving of wong bok.

The fried fish is more batter than meat but one thing about it is that it is very crunchy. Despite having soaked in the soup, the crunch remained till the end. However, the batter is on the hard side which may suggest it has been over fried.

As for the wong bok, it lends some sweetness to the soup which is very rich and tasty although I do suspect the presence of msg.

I came to be aware of this stall's fish soup through the recurring postings by random Instagram friends. As mentioned, this stall does not have a name on its yellow signboard which functions more like a menu instead.

The words on the signboard are self explanatory; fish soup, fried fish soup, seafood soup and mixed pig's organ soup.

The fish soup seems to be the most popular choice, particularly the shuang yu/双鱼 (double fish) which comes with both sliced fish and fried fish. You can have your fish soup as it is, or with white rice, yam rice, mee suabee hoon and yee mee. You can add on bitter gourd and meat balls for additional cost.

The stall operates from 7am to 2pm from Mondays to Saturdays but do take note that they take a thirty minutes break from 10.15am to 10.45am.
