Just a few stalls down from Tiong Bahru Lor Mee, located within the same coffee shop is Yong Heng Fried Baby Squid Prawn Mee.
I was actually looking for the lor mee stall when I chanced upon this stall selling Hokkien mee. The sight of the three whole squids atop the plate of fried Hokkien mee on the signboard (refer to the last photo below) prompted me to order a medium ($4/$6/$8) plate to try.
When my order was ready, I took a look at my plate longingly but the three squids were no where to be seen. There are only squid rings and if you piece them all together, does not even form the half of one squid, not to mention three.
Oh no.
Have I been taken for a ride? Is this yet another case of "photos are for illustration only"?
When will I stop being gullible?

My plate of noodle seemed kind of empty without much ingredients save for the squid rings and five pieces of medium sized prawns which were reasonably fresh although the texture is kind of mushy. And I do not see any pork slices or belly strips. I feel it is pathetic if the ingredients have been reduced to micro size and customers have to really go dig for it yet still cannot find them in the end.
Despite the disappointment from the missing squids, I have to say I do enjoy the wet and gloopy texture of the noodles. To give credit where credit is due, the mix of yellow noodle and thick bee hoon have absorbed the rich flavors of the braising stock and simmered to a saucy consistency that I like.
Their sambal chili deserves a mention too as I could taste the umami flavors in it. Though good on its own, I was undecided whether to mix the chili in which would totally alter the taste of the original seafood flavor.
In the end, I had the best of both worlds by splitting the noodle into two portions. I ate half in its original flavor while the other half with the chili mixed in.
With that said, I still feel indignant that they did not deliver what's promised. If you do not serve it the way it is represented on your signboard, then please be truthful about it.
There is this saying "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me". I will probably think twice before going back again.
However, I am not against anyone visiting the stall but do manage your expectations as there will be no whole squids in your fried baby squid prawn mee.
