En Hui Vegetarian Food - Vegetarian Chicken Rice @ Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre

In the previous post, I had the vegetarian nasi lemak from Hong Cook Food however, my hunger was not satiated by its small portion so I went in search of the other vegetarian stalls at Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre to see what they have to offer.

I came upon En Hui Vegetarian Food and what caught my eye here, is the photo of their vegetarian chicken rice ($5).

The stall owner began to fry the mock chicken in the deep fryer only after I placed an order so there is a short wait.

Chicken House - Succulent Yellow Skinned Kampong Chicken @ Kilat Court

I have always been intrigued by the yellow skinned poached chickens from Hong Kong that I often see on tv and I am glad to have found one not too far from my place. 

Located in a coffee shop called Chicken House at Kilat Court along Lorong Kilat, I am not sure if the chickens here are the same or even comparable to the ones from Hong Kong. Nevertheless, compared to the pale looking ones which we have been enjoying for years, this felt like a breathe of fresh air. 

I ordered to takeaway a ji wei fan (鸡尾饭) which is basic[ally the part from the butt to the thigh area. This portion is generally smoother and juicier than say, the breast. 

However, I was told that they have run out of ji wei and if drumstick is okay. Well, I am more than happy to oblige but the price seems a little steep at $4.70. 

A mini tub of garlic chili and dark soya sauce were included alongside my pack of chicken rice.

Mention chicken rice in Yishun and 925 Chicken Rice near the old bus interchange would come to mind. I had it before but did not find it inspiring enough to want to write about it.

It has been years since then and now I am back on a food trail around Yishun. I thought of looking for another chicken rice stall to try and my search brought me to this chicken rice stall called Qi Le Chicken Rice located inside the S-11 coffee shop near the MRT station.

It is easy to get here: simply exit the MRT station and follow the footpath to the coffee shop. The stall is right in the middle of the coffee shop, partially hidden behind a pillar.

It is not my first time having chicken rice at Shi Mei Hainanese Chicken Rice stall however, it is my first time writing about them.

Just a five minutes walk away from Bukit Gombak MRT station, the coffee shop is pretty close to where I stay so I would drop by for breakfast once every couple of months.

This time, I ordered the sesame chicken rice set at $4, which comes with a bowl of rice, a plate of chicken meat and a bowl of soup. I did not request for a specific chicken part.

Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice 海南起骨雞飯 @ Golden Mile Food Centre

This Hainanese chicken rice stall at the basement of Golden Mile Food Centre has a very straight forward name called Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice. It is located right next to the fried Hokkien noodle stall from my previous post.

Despite the lack of newspaper cuttings and accolades, this unassuming chicken rice stall attracts a perpetual queue everyday which is made up of both locals and tourists.

During my visit on a Saturday afternoon, I queued for about twenty minutes before I reached the front of the line.

The stall offers both roasted chicken as well as poached chicken.

Adimann - Chicken Rice Flintstone @ Golden Mile Food Centre

I am pretty excited to try out this stall which sells a selection of seafood items and stir-frys like hor fun, fried rice, mee goreng, etc.

However, I am there mainly for their nasi lemak (fatty rice) and nasi ayam (chicken rice). You may be spoilt for choice here as this two dishes came in many variations!

From the normal chicken drumstick and chicken cutlet to the increasingly popular lobster with salted egg sauce, Adimann is set all out to please their customers.

Aspirasi - Ayam Penyet @ Seah Im Food Centre

After Dad's appointment at NUH, he requested to have the ayam penyet at Seah Im Food Centre which we had previously. The ayam penyet that we had then was from Farisha Muslim Food (#01-31).

This time, I suggested that we try the one from Aspirasi instead as it is the famous one at Seah Im Food Centre. I mean, if you google for ayam penyet at this food centre, Aspirasi is the only name that turn up in the search results although there are more than one ayam penyet stalls here.

Aspirasi specializes in fried chicken rice served with your choice of sauces: sambal ($4); sweet & sour ($4); lemon ($4) and black pepper ($4). Other than these sauces, you can also opt for the normal chicken rice ($3.50) or penyet ($5) that comes with a whole chicken leg.

Alternatively, they have fried rice with chicken ($5) and fried rice tomato with sambal chicken ($5.50) which is quite popular as well.

Farasha Muslim Food - Ayam Penyet @ Seah Im Food Centre

A while back, I brought the folks to Seah Im Food Centre to try out the lor mee from Shi Ji Noodle Stall.

After our meal, Mum spotted the next table having the ayam penyet from Farasha Muslim Stall. Tempted by what we saw, we ordered one set to share among the three of us.

The name ayam penyet translates as "smashed chicken" which means the chicken is flattened by smashing after being fried to a crisp. I have actually seen the stall at NUH's food court using a mallet.

A dish of Indonesia origins, I have eaten ayam penyet quite a number of times, but it is the first for them. 

The ayam penyet ($5) here comes with a chicken leg, cucumber, raw cabbage, a cube of tau kwa, a piece of thumb-length tempeh and sambal. The rice and soup are served separately on another plate.

The first time I had chicken rice ball was in Malacca three years ago. Frankly speaking, I was not too impressed by it. I remember the rice ball is mushy and lacked the aroma that I am accustomed to with Singapore-styled chicken rice.

When I found out that there is a stall in Jalan Besar selling chicken rice ball, I decided to see how it compares to the one across the causeway.

Jalan Besar is the part of Rochor area that I have not ventured before but the stall is surprisingly easy to find if you are coming by Rochor MRT Station.

Just take the exit towards Veerasamy Road, exit the station (you should see Lasalle College of the Arts opposite you), turn left and follow the pavement to the coffeeshop which is just round the corner.

Hua Kee Chicken Rice 华记鸡饭 @ Redhill Market & Food Centre

My last visit to Redhill Food Centre was more than 10 years ago when I walk pass it from Redhill MRT Station while on my way to have my pre-NS checkup at CMPB.

At that time, I knew nothing about the many good food to be found in this old, humble estate. For my return after more than a decade, I did some research online and compiled a list of the must-eats here at the food centre.

Among the popular stalls that made it to my list is (#01-09), whose fried chicken wings is supposedly so good that our Prime Minister Lee was spotted in the queue. Then, there is also Seng Heng Duck Mee (#01-28), Bak Kee Satay Bee Hoon (#01-42) and Hua Kee Chicken Rice (#01-72).

Get Ready For More With The New KFC Rice Bucket!


KFC Singapore has just launched a new rice item - the KFC Rice Bucket. That got me real excited because I love chicken rice AND KFC and what better way to combine both!

When I first saw the TVC and poster, I thought the so-call "bucket" would be just like the A.M porridge size which is pretty small for my appetite.

However, I was taken aback when my order came! For those who are wondering about the size of the bucket, I can assure you that it is huge! The bucket is literally a 饭桶 (rice bucket)!

The KFC Rice Bucket comes in two different flavors:  Á La King sauce with mixed veggies and Original Recipe Sauce with mushrooms.

I opt for the latter.

Ipoh Lou Yau Bean Sprouts Chicken @ IMM Jurong East

Nga Choi Gai (芽菜鸡), or better known as bean sprouts chicken is a dish synonymous to Ipoh. If you wanted a taste of it, you might have to make a car trip all the way there but now, not anymore!

Select Group Limited has brought in Ipoh Lou Yau Bean Sprouts Chicken (怡保老友芽菜鸡) to Singapore with several branches located island wide.

So, what is so special with this Ipoh Lou Yau Bean Sprouts Chicken?

Firstly, Lou Yau uses free-range chickens, or what we normally call the "kampong chicken". These chickens are specially sourced and imported to Singapore where they are prepared in a central kitchen to ensure consistency in quality.

Next, the chicken can be served with either chicken rice or sar hor fun (沙河粉).

Thirdly, Ipoh's nga choi (bean sprouts) is totally different from our local ones. Theirs are well-known for being plump and short in appearance though it remains a mystery whether their physical trait has got anything to do with the spring water that they were grown in.

Due to her geographical location, Ipoh is surrounded by limestone hills and the spring water that flows down these hills are alkaline and rich in minerals. As mentioned earlier, Ipoh's beansprouts are grown with this spring water while the sar hor fun were also made with water from the same source.

You would be pleased to know that the bean sprouts and sar hor fun were also imported direct from Ipoh hence customers can be assured that they are having the real deal.

Ah Tai Hainanese Chicken Rice @ Maxwell Food Centre

Have you heard about the drama over at Maxwell Market?

For the clueless, Ah Tai used to be the head-chef of Tian Tian who got fired over a dispute.

It was reported that Ah Tai did not manage his workers well and he shouted/threatened them to the point that they felt unsafe at work.

Ah Tai was aggrieved by the accusations. He is further disheartened by the fact that his twenty years of service to Tian Tian went unappreciated.

But that is not the end of the story yet.
