Do not
be fooled by the stall's name because there is no granny behind the stall at
Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly. Instead, it is granny's grandson, Mr Yeo, serving you
chin chow (grass jelly) based on her recipe and him fine-tuning it.
Granny began selling grass jelly on the streets after the war as a means to support her family until she retired in 1974.
In 1996, Mr Yeo decided to learn the skills from her and started this stall at Golden Mile Food Centre after leaving his electronics job.

From boiling the herbs to straining it and turning it into jelly, every step is handmade by Mr Yeo himself.
You can have grass jelly strips in syrup water as a beverage or have it curd-like in a bowl plain on its own ($1.50), or with a variety of toppings such as nata de coco, palm seed (attap chee), longan and sea coconut ($2).
I ordered a bowl of grass jelly with sea coconut which is topped with a scoop of shaved ice. I love how it is scooped from a wooden bucket and served in a traditional porcelain bowl.
The grass jelly has a smooth and bouncy texture which is definitely better than the generic factory made ones. With the shaved ice, it is simply refreshing to have in our climate.

Grass jelly has medicinal values and is known to bring down fevers, prevent indigestion and lower high blood pressure.
This is my grass jelly with attap chee (palm seeds) from another visit.
