The braised duck rice from Heng Gi Goose And Duck Rice at Tekka Market & Food Centre was added to my checklist years ago however, I have not gotten the opportunity to cross them out yet.
I do pass by Tekka via the downtown line occasionally but it is impractical to walk out of the station while in the midst of a journey just to try the duck rice there.
To my surprise, they opened a stall at the new Senja Hawker Centre which is so much more accessible to me now. I know I have run out of excuses putting off what I needed to do eons ago.
I wanted the braised duck with white rice ($4) but decided upon the set ($5.50) instead as that come with additional sides of braised tau kwa, braised peanuts and half a braised egg.
Under normal circumstances, I do not care for the sides as they do not appeal to me however, it is my first time trying this stall and for photos' sake, I wanted to see how the 'upsized' set looks like.
There is an option to swap the white rice for pumpkin yam rice at 50¢ more. Apart from rice, you can have the braised duck with kway chap ($4.50), noodle ($4) and porridge ($3.50) as well.
A huge pot of lor (braising sauce) made from a blend of soy and herbs, sits conspicuously behind the counter. Said liquid is doused over my plate and its contents. Now, this is the type of runny lor I like compared to those starchy ones.
To me, the extra sides were nothing more than fillers to keep one full and they did get the job done.
I had forgotten to take a good look at the ala carte items they have. Not sure if they serve pig's skin or the Teochew-style fish cake? I would love to get those instead.
The duck meat is deboned and thinly sliced so it makes for easy eating. I hate to grapple with bones that stubbornly refuses to separate from the meat.
Although what I got was the breast meat, it is not tough nor dry at all. On the contrary, it is tender, moist and seeping with the salty savory lor.
My order came with a bowl of dark colored soup made with the same delectable lor as its base. However, it tastes rather watered-down with mild herbal notes. Served separately on the side, it is a good palate cleanser however, I wished the flavors could be more pronounced.
