Still feeling peckish from my minced meat noodle, I decided to order a Singaporean traditional breakfast set from the coffee stall.

For the uninformed, such local breakfast normally consists of two soft boiled eggs, toasted bread (with your choice of spread eg. kaya/butter/peanut butter) and a beverage.

According to my research, this coffee shop offers steamed bread with otah which is not commonly available at other coffee shops and therefore highly recommended. They also serve supposedly good Nanyang coffee (heard the proprietors are related to Tong Ya).

The customization for my order includes two soft boiled eggs, steamed bread with otah and a small cup of kopi-o. All these for $4.10.

Simple and no frills.

The full works

You can opt for steamed or toasted bread to have with your otah. I picked the former.

The combination of bread with otah is not something new as I myself have recreated that at home a couple of times before but somehow, it just felt differently having it in a coffee shop setting.

Perhaps, it is the warmth of the soft and fluffy white bread in my hands or maybe, it is the nostalgic memories of yesteryear in the old school coffee shop?

I am glad my eggs did not arrive in a tub of hot water because I would have to wait 5 minutes for them to be done and another 5 minutes for them to be cool enough to handle.

I simply have to crack them open, add a dash of soy and pepper then consume them straight from the saucer. No spoon required.

Unfortunately, the yolks are no longer runny which suggests that the eggs had been left in the hot water bath for a tad too long.

My kopi-o is decent with a rich and roasty aroma and just the right amount of sweetness.

Seng Hong Coffee Shop is one of those last surviving old school coffee shop that seemed untouched by time. Visit them while you still can before they bite the dust in this fast paced society.
