618 Sim Carrot Cake is located in a quiet neighborhood at Yishun near Khatib MRT Station. The stall sells white carrot cake ($3/$4) while giving customers the option to add prawns ($4.50/$6). They used to sell the black version as well but not anymore.

I ordered the smallest $3 plate and was given a buzzer after I paid up. According to online reviews, I was mentally prepared to wait for up to an hour but all it took was about ten minutes for my buzzer to start vibrating.

I was astonished to see the portion of my $3 carrot cake on the counter, ready for collection. I thought the auntie has made a mistake and had given me the $4 plate instead. I double checked with her and she assured me that it is indeed my order.

The generous portion can actually be shared among two persons which is totally value for money!

Apart from its big portion, what made this carrot cake stand out is the chye poh (preserved radish).

Normally, the chye poh would be fried together with the carrot cake giving the occasional burst of flavor but this one here is served on the side which you can have by itself or mixed in.

One thing for sure is that the additional amount of chye poh definitely helped to improve the taste profile and mouthfeel of the carrot cake!

Each order is individually fried which explains the long waiting time. It is good that they have adopted the paging system so you do not have to stand around in front of the stall.

The soft radish cubes are fried with their home-made chili (if you opt for spiciness) and chye poh over a large skillet pan before beaten egg was added. Held together by the layer of egg, its exterior was fried to a smokey crisp without being oily.

Scooped onto a plate, more chye poh is added by the side. The aroma of the chili, chye poh and eggy fragrance combined is irresistible!

As I am writing this, I am clamoring for another plate of 618 Sim Carrot Cake. It is one of the best I had in a long, long while!

I particularly loved the lightly charred taste of the browned bits which is how I like my carrot cake to be. I would always request my usual stall to make my order a little chao tar (burnt).

618 Sim Carrot Cake actually did it without me asking! 🙆

My only gripe is that the choice of utensil provided is chopsticks. A spoon will make those loose cubes at the bottom easier to handle.

But I did managed to wipe clean the plate by bringing it to my mouth and sweeping everything in with the chopsticks.
