58 Minced Meat Noodle is undoubtedly one of the more popular stalls evident by its daily snaking queue. Located on the third floor of Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre, the line often stretched to the nearby escalator, blocking the path of the people coming up.

With a history spanning 47 years, the stall is now succeeded by Deon Ang, the second generation who has been helping his father out at the stall since his teenage years when they were still at their previous location.

On the day of my visit, Deon was there at the helm, cooking bowl after bowls of minced meat noodle at lightning speed while assisted by a lady helper.

I queued for about 15 minutes before reaching the front of the stall to place an order for a bowl of dry mee pok with the helper. After cooking for the customer in front of me, Deon stepped out of the stall for his break while the helper took over the cooking.

I ordered the medium bowl minced meat noodle which come in three sizes ($3/$4/$5). The largest bowl included button mushroom that is not found in the smaller bowls.

Served in a porcelain bowl, I see sliced mushrooms, sliced pork, minced pork and pig's liver atop a mound of mee pok. Honestly, I was rather unimpressed by what I see. How does this plain-looking bowl of minced meat noodle (photo above) win the hearts of so many people?

However, the skeptical me changed my mind after a good tossing revealed the hidden sauces underneath. Dressed in a luxurious coat of sauce made up of their piquant chili sauce and probably pork lard oil, the noodle now looked like a million dollars.

Do not be intimidated by the seemingly potent chili sauce which is not that spicy at all. Two kinds of cut chili - the normal red chili and chili padi - are provided if you want some heat.

There is also a bottle of black vinegar on the counter which you can help yourself to for more sour notes.

Credits must also be given to the freshness of the meats, particularly the liver which is very tender.

I can see why 58 Minced Meat Noodle is so well-loved that people from the East are willing to come to the far West to have it. Being a Westie, I wonder why it took me so long to discover this gem right in my own backyard?
