Update: Soh Food has permanently closed.

I just realized that the stalls at Empress Road Market & Food Centre which I have featured on this blog are all located along the same row just next to each other.

The third stall that I wanted to introduce at this food centre is called Soh Food. From its name alone, it might be hard to guess what they sell but their specialty is actually stewed duck.

Do not confuse stewed duck with braised duck because they are not the same even though they may look similar. In fact, I have not heard of stewed duck before and this is definitely my first time having it!

I ordered a stewed duck leg which came with a portion of spinach and two pieces of Chinese mushrooms. You can make it into a meal by having it served with either kway teow or rice.

I opted for rice and my set (see photo above) costs $6.

I asked the chatty auntie what is the difference between stewed duck and braised duck but despite her explanation, I still do not understand. Anyone who knows the answer can share it with me by leaving a comment below.

For a good whole minute, I sat there at the table admiring the beautiful duck leg.

I used my chopsticks to pry the meat apart from the bone and it tears away effortlessly. I thought that the texture would be mushy but no, it is tender and soft. The meat is fresh tasting with no gamey smell.

The sauce is rather light, without being too salty or sweet and that allows the natural flavors of the duck to shine through. You can dip the meat in the given sambal belacan for some excitement to your taste buds.

Soh Food sounds like soul food. I think the name is very appropriate because the stewed duck leg is very comforting to have.

Apart from stewed duck leg, they also serve stewed duck wings and stewed fish maw. Whole ducks and a deluxe combo combining a bit of everything (good for 4-5 pax) are also available through pre-order (Whatsapp 819 89368).
