Queenstown Lontong Mee Rebus @ Tanglin Halt Food Centre

While doing my research about Tanglin Halt Food Centre, I learned about the wonderful mee rebus from Queenstown Lontong. To be honest, it was a photo of the noodle dish that caught my attention.

To verify if the mee rebus was really as good as what the reviews claimed to be, I decided that a visit to the stall is in order!

On the day of my visit, the two ladies from the stall were amiable and full of smiles. It made my trip  a welcoming one.

Just like any Malay stalls, they serve typical breakfast such as nasi lemak, lontong, mee rebusmee siam, mee soto and soto ayam. Every dish costs a standard $3.

I was initially undecided between having mee rebus or mee soto but I eventually caved in to the former.

When my order was ready, I am stoked to see the gravy almost overflowing from the edge of the bowl! While making my way to the table, I had to keep an eye on it to make sure that I do not spill any. Perhaps that is the reason why the bowl is placed on a plate.

How generous and thoughtful!

The mee rebus is topped with coriander, fried shallots, green chili and half a lime on the side.

I squeezed the lime for its zest and began stirring which revealed the mound of yellow noodles, hard-boiled egg and tau kwa within. Usually, the tau kwa are cut into little cubes but here, they gave you half a slice of it!

I am uncertain what goes in the gravy but the complex flavors of sweet and savory took my breathe away.

The texture of the yellow noodle is quite soft with just a little spring to it and the gravy clung well onto it. I closed my eyes in contentment to allow my tongue to frolic with the gravy in my mouth.

As I picked up the last strand of noodle, there is still quite a bit of gravy left. It goes to show how generous they are with it. I am pretty sure the gravy was thickened with sweet potato puree rather than starch as it maintained its consistency till the last drop.

There is nothing to dislike about this mee rebus but if I die die have to pick a bone with, it would be this 'filament thingy' that probably come from the lemongrass fibre in the rempah.

Who could resist fried chicken wing especially a piping hot one that is fresh off the wok? I know I can't. The batter is crunchy while the flavor of tumeric is quite distinct. And the best part of the deal?The chicken wing costs only a dollar!
