A few months back, these mini balls that are literally bursting with molten lava caught my attention on Instagram. I told myself then that I have to give them a try somehow and I finally did when I decided to cover Golden Mile Food Centre.
Located at the basement of the food centre, Mr. Baguette's molten lava balls came in an impressive 15 savory and sweet flavors!
They are:
- Original
- Bolognese Chicken
- Carbonara
- Black Pepper Chicken
- Chicken Pie
- Chocolate Lava
- Cheese Lava
- Hazelnut Lava
- Apple Lava
- Tiramisu Lava
- Cookie n' Cream Lava
- Red Velvet Lava
- Azuki Lava
- Blueberry Lava
- Eskimo Lava
With so many flavors to choose from, I thought it would be too jelat to eat that many lava balls in one sitting. I decided to try out two flavors at a time, spread over several visits to the food centre when I visit the other stalls.
That was the initial plan.
I realized that I could only visit the food centre once a week or maybe even once a fortnight. On the days that I managed to go, the stall could be closed or do not have the flavor I wanted so yeah, the compilation of this post actually took way much longer than I expected.
I have to admit the walking distance over from Lavender MRT Station is also a factor that made me tired of the repeated visits to the food centre.
The lava balls are actually made from baguettes like these which are about the size of a baby's fist. They had their center carefully hollowed out and filled with the delicious fillings. Actually, I am more compelled to call them bread bowls instead.
While eating, I find the outer crust crispy and thin yet strong enough to contain the molten lava within its walls without turning soggy.
The Cookie n' Creme and Chocolate
For my first visit, I had the Cookie n' Creme and Chocolate.
Cookie n' Creme
The lava is made from white chocolate and Oreo both of which I can never say no to. This is one of my favorite.
Chocolate
Matcha & Azuki and Blueberry
The Matcha & Azuki is actually the one that caught my eye and also the one that I wanted to try first but they were not ready yet during my visit the previous week.
As for the Blueberry, it is the flavor which I am not too keen to taste the most but since they happened to be placed side by side on the tray, I simply grabbed both.
The lava in the Matcha & Azuki is not too runny so there is no risk of getting the matcha all over your fingers. The azuki (red beans) have a crunchy bite to it due to the baking which is quite nice.
Blueberry
The Blueberry is a sneaky one. While I was carefully biting the front, the lava squirted out from the rear instead and got all over my fingers.
As mentioned earlier, I am not too fond of blueberry because the flavor reminded me of children's cough syrup.
Red Velvet and Tiramisu
Red Velvet is something that I am trying for the first time and I still have not got the slightest clue how to describe it. I only knew the filling is made with yoghurt, beetroot, chocolate and cheese.
Red Velvet
The Red Velvet is another one that is super runny. Just one bite and the lava will come gushing with a vengeance.
Tiramisu
There is not much of a lava in the Tiramisu. I am not sure if that is because of the "Almond Sponge" in the middle? I tasted mainly cheese in this one.
Eskimo
Beware! The Eskimo is another one of those super runny ones.
Eskimo
The Eskimo is filled with white chocolate and peppermint. I am not too big a fan of peppermint though.
Hazelnut
The Hazelnut is a little too rich for my liking.
Hazelnut
The Hazelnut is filled with hazelnut paste and chocolate.
Apple
I thought I will not like the Apple but on the contrary, it is one of my favorite. There is not much lava in this one.
Apple
The Apple is filled with apple chunks with hints of cinnamon.
Cheese
Who can resist melted cheese? This is definitely one of my favorite!
Cheese
The Cheese is filled with four types of cheese.
Carbonara and Bolognese Chicken
Apart from the sweet flavors, savory flavors are available as well. Frankly, I think it is quite ingenious of them to come up with this idea. These are like full meals in little packages. And... no. I do not think the savory flavors are meant to be lava-ish.
First up, we have the Cabonara and Bolognese Chicken.
Cabonara
The Cabonara is filled with macaroni, chicken ham and cabonara sauce.
Bolognese Chicken
The Bolognese Chicken is filled with macaroni, tomato puree and chicken cubes.
Chicken Pie
Another favorite of mine from the savory range is the chicken pie.
Chicken Pie
It is filled with mixed vegetables, potato and chicken.
Black Pepper Chicken
For some strange reason, the Black Pepper Chicken smells like poh chai pills to me and stranger still, I kind of like it although the black pepper is quite fiery.
Black Pepper Chicken
The Black Pepper Chicken is filled with black pepper sauce, chicken and macaroni.
The baguettes are best eaten when they are fresh out of the oven. Unfortunately, by the time I started on these two, they had already turned cold.
In hindsight, why didn't I thought of bringing them back to the stall to heat up since I am still at the food centre?
The "Original" is actually egg custard in the same baguette ball. As the baguette has already turned cold, the texture have turned chewy and difficult to tear apart. The custard is smooth and silky though.
When it comes to egg tarts, I prefer the Portuguese style with its layered, flaky shell more than the Hong Kong style with its pastry shell.
The egg tarts here at Mr Baguette belonged to the Portuguese style that I like. Although the tart has turned cold, I can still taste the buttery fragrance of the shell.
These lovely molten lava balls costs $3 each or 2 for $4.
Have plenty of serviettes ready or make sure you are within reach to a washing point because things are going to get messy and ugly.
Apart from lava balls, Mr. Baguette also serve 25cm baguette toasts with a variety of spreads such as garlic, french cheese, hawaiian pizza, peanut butter, kaya, etc.
