What has laksa yong tau foo and even curry noodles got to do with the Cantonese? When I first heard about this stall at Hong Lim Market & Food Centre called Cantonese Delights offering these dishes, I was perplexed.

Nevertheless, I decided to give their curry fried chicken cutlet noodle a try because it looked so darn good.

I reached the stall at about 9am on a Sunday morning and there were about ten customers scattered around in front of the stall, waiting for them to open. When I returned five minutes later, these customers had already formed a line. I promptly joined the queue and it did not take long to reach my turn.

I ordered the small portion of curry fried chicken cutlet noodle for $4.

The freshly fried chicken cutlet is of quite a substantial size. Juicy and tender, the fairly thick piece of meat is encased within a thin, crispy layer of batter.

I suspect the well-seasoned chicken cutlet is marinated with nam yu (red fermented bean curd).

As the chicken cutlet was half submerged in the curry, the bottom part was soggy while the top retained its crispiness. It would be good if they had served it on a separate plate.

The very lemak curry is flavorful yet not heavy but, my doctor would have a cardiac arrest seeing me finishing every drop of that!

My only gripe about the dish have to be the noodles. What I initially thought were bee hoon (rice vermicelli) turned out to be mee kia (thin noodles). I am rather shock by this pairing. It does not help that the mee kia had a slight alkaline smell that my nose could still detect over all that spices. I could not finish the noodles.

The chicken cutlet and the curry gravy are pretty promising. This will not be the last time that I eat their curry fried chicken cutlet noodle but the next time, I will request for bee hoon instead.
