Eat At Taipei @ JCUBE

Located at Jurong East, JCUBE (the former Jurong Entertainment Centre) was officially opened in April this year. My plans to visit the place failed to materialize due to the fact that I hate jostling with people.

I eventually convinced myself to make a trip down a couple of days ago when my brother tasked me to bring our parents to meet up with him for dinner at "Eat At Taipei", a Taiwaese eatery on the third level of JCUBE.

"Eat At Taipei" is situated right next to the skating rink so it might get a little cold here but where else could you experience watching skaters go round in the rink while digging in to a piping hot meal?

Beverages include Bubble Tea and Pearl Milk Tea

Very eye-catching shop signs with a night market feel
Signature Milk Tea $2.50

I ordered a signature Milk Tea but find it ordinary. Gong Cha Milk Tea is still the best in my opinion.

Vermicelli with Oysters $6.90

This is Mum's Vermicelli with Oyster.

I have no idea how it compares to the real thing as I have never been to Taiwan but I do not like the taste at all. I believe the soup should be gooey but this is rather diluted.

I would still very much prefer the mee sua from the Shihlin franchise.

'Danzai' Noodle Soup $4.90

This is sister-in-law's 'Danzai' Noodle Soup.

I did not managed to try the taste. The egg looks weird though.

'Sanbei' Chicken with Basil $16.90

This is Dad's 'Sanbei' Chicken with Basil.

Literally tasteless. Could not discern the taste of wine, sesame oil and dark soy sauce.

Pork Knuckles Set $15.90

This is my Pork Knuckles Set!

It is extremely nice!

The knuckles were well-braised while the collagen were so yummy! Compared to Dad's 'Sanbei' Chicken, mine tastes so much better! What I could not fathom was why Dad's 'Sanbei' Chicken is costlier than my Pork Knuckles?

What disappoints me was that the morsel of minced meat on the rice is tasteless. I hope it is not Braised Fatty Pork rice?

What a pity.

Coming up next are the communal dishes!

Spring Onion Pancake $3.90

This Spring Onion Pancake tastes very much like Prata with Spring Onions! Very crispy!

Oyster Omelette $6.90

This was my most anticipated dish of the night but the oyster omelette which we had were rather oily.

The oysters does not resemble any of those succulent ones which we see on Taiwan food programmes. The ones here looked like they came from concentration camps.

It seems that I still prefer our local version.

Bittergourd Soup $4.50

This is actually the first dish to arrive on the table. We had thought that it would be a big bowl but what came was only a single person portion. Each of us had a spoonful and the bowl was nearly emptied.

This is a very tasty bowl of Bittergourd Soup and it is our first time having Bittergourd Soup with Pineapple and Bean Paste!

Superb!

Tainan 'Coffin' Toast $8.90

Coffin Toast is a piece of thick toast which had it's center hollowed out and filled with creamy soup and seafood.

I have always been curious how it tastes like? After a sip, I realised that the soup tastes like milk.

Although I like milk, I do find the soup a little too sweet for my liking. Furthermore, the toast was deep fried hence it is a little nauseating for me.

Done with our main course, we ordered desserts.

What better to order than the Mango Shaved Ice which we have seen so much on TV. We also ordered a bowl of Passionfruit Shaved Ice.

I could scarcely contain myself just thinking about the Mango!

[via]

That bowl of shaved ice laden with Mango cubes in the photo above was what I expected to be the ideal bowl of Mango Shaved Ice however, there is always a stark contrast between expectations and reality.

The Mango Shaved Ice which we ordered looked like this.

Mango Shaved Ice $7.90

Unexpectedly, what's laden on our shaved ice were not Mango cubes but Mango-flavored syrup. The pathetic few pieces of Mango cubes that lay unnoticed on the side were unriped and extremely sour.

At $7.90 a bowl, I had expected something more than just ice and syrup.

The Passionfruit Shaved Ice on the other hand was alot better than I had imagined. Even though it was also sour but it was more paletable.

On the whole, there were a few hits and misses with "Eat At Taipei".

Prices are inclined on the higher side. This meal costs around $120.
