After Dad's hospital appointment on a Monday, we decided to drop by Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre for dinner since we are traveling by the downtown line.

We initially wanted to have the white bee hoon but the stall was closed. Instead, I was surprised to see Xie Kee Hokkien Mee opened for business because according to Burpple, Monday is their off day.

The uncle is sitting outside of his stall all alone without a single customer in sight. My immediate thought is how lucky we are, to be the first in queue thus we do not have to wait for long. I immediately placed an order for two $3 plates of Hokkien mee and took a seat beside the stall.

However, as we waited, I thought uncle is taking an unusually long time with our orders. I craned my neck for a look and discovered that he did not cook plate by plate but rather, one big batch of noodles in a wok. At this point, I realized that a good plate of Hokkien mee cannot be rushed as they need time to be simmered in the broth.

After what seemed like forever (by that time, a short queue had already formed in front of the stall), uncle beckoned me to collect my order as he began scooping the noodles onto plates. To my dismay, I found that one plate had significantly lesser noodles than the other.

Xie Kee uses thick bee hoon and flat yellow noodles instead of the usual round yellow noodles that other places are using. This Hokkien mee is served slightly wet just the way I like it. With a squeeze of lime and the sambal mixed in, the stock-infused noodles tasted flavorsome.

Each of our plate comes with two small-sized prawns and quite a bit of tiny squid pieces however, they were overcooked.

Also, there are two very important elements which I found missing from this plate of Hokkien mee which is pork belly strips and crispy pork lard. Include these and I would be a happy regular here.

The nearest MRT Station from here is Beauty World (DT5) on the blue-colored Downtown Line. Exit from the station at Exit C and walk to destination in about 2-3 minutes.
